How do I explain my fascination with these grimy, dark, foreboding subjects that prompt viewers to ask themselves, “Is this what I want hanging on a wall in my living room?” I suppose it is a natural extension of my interest in architecture, expanding to encompass the built environment beyond the familiar civic and residential structures. Many of these painting are the result of working with soft pastel in the creation of a clay print, and/or after the print has been pulled, others are 100% soft pastel.
My successful application for membership into the Pastel Society of America was based on 3, or was it 4, pastel industrial landscapes I submitted to be juried. I was awarded Signature Membership, giving me the right to add PSA after my signature. My initial enthusiasm quickly ended when it occurred to me PSA also stands for Prostate Specific Antigen.
